Magsaysay Award Winner, 2007- Mahabir Pun

Asia’s premier prize, Magsaysay, winner Mr. Mahabir Pun, 52, made us proud for his outstanding contribution to community leadership. He used wireless computer technology to connect Nangi village, Myagdi district, to the rest of the world.

Raman Magsaysay Award Foundation President Carmencita Abella said, “The Magsaysay awardees of 2007 are truly moving Asia forward through their remarkable and selfless service to their respective societies.”

The winners will each receive a certificate, a medallion bearing the likeness of the president, and $50,000.

The awards will be presented to the winners on August 31, said Carmencita Abella. Mahabir Pun was awarded the community leadership award for his "innovative application" of wireless computer technology that ushered in progress in remote villages of Nepal, the organizers said.

Dedication and perseverance pay off one day. Unlike others, he used his knowledge for improvements of remote village. He did not enjoy US society but he selected his own remote village to live in and do something for the community. We should not neglect our societies.

These days, students have view of serving their own community after higher education but no one goes there to serve. We may see this in health sector in our country. Everybody, with good marks in SLC and Higher Secondary wishes for community service, after higher education, but almost all do not want to leave the urban areas.
Mahabir has firm determination to live in the community which helped him to achieve successful moments. I remember the sentence at this moment-Winner never quit and quitters never win.

If we work to uplift our community nobody is going to come and work for our betterment.
