THE MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS

1. Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
This goal aims to reduce by half the number of people whose income is less than $1 per day, and those who suffer hunger.

2. Achieve universal primary education
The goal is to enable all children, boys and girls alike, to complete primary schooling.

3. Promote gender equality and empower women
One of the targets of this goal is to enable girls to attend all levels of schooling in equal numbers to boys.

4. Reduce child mortality
The target for this goal is to reduce by two thirds the number of deaths in children under five.

5. Improve maternal health
One of the targets for this goal is to reduce by three quarters the number of women dying in childbirth.

6. Combat HIV and AIDS, malaria and other diseases
The targets for this goal are to halt and begin to reverse the spread of HIV and AIDS and the incidence of malaria and other major diseases by 2015.

7. Ensure environmental sustainability
Targets include the need to protect the environment, to reduce by half the number of people without access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation, and to significantly improve the lives of slum dwellers.

8. Develop a global partnership for development
Targets for this goal are aimed at Northern governments and include major increases in development aid, relieving debt in resource-poor countries and developing a fair international trading system.
